The former owner of a popular Asian restaurant is proposing a new strip mall for West Fifth Street, but a revival of his restaurant is not in the works.
JKH Eastern Enterprises, which is owned by Jerry Hyun who also owned Jerry’s House of Hunan, has proposed a strip mall for 1180-1188 W. Fifth St., Marysville, the property adjacent to the east of the police station and municipal court building.
The shopping center will be named the Oakland Plaza.
Hyun said he will not be reopening his restaurant.
“I have no plans,” Hyun said. “I am too old to start a new restaurant.”
He said several years ago he tried to open Jerry’s Asian Kitchen and Grill on Allenby Drive, but the plan never took off.
Hyun joked that he has worked hard and at his age, “everyone wants to retire.”
He said the property is part of his retirement plan.
“I just want to have that income for my retirement,” Hyun said.
According to information filed with the city, the 8,043 square foot building could hold as many as six retail shops, equally sized.
“Right now, I am just looking for tenants,” Hyun said. “I don’t have any tenants yet.”
He said he cannot get financing to begin construction of the project until he has tenants.
“I don’t have a plan,” he said of his timeline.
Hyun said he is not targeting specific businesses or types of businesses for the commercial center.
The one-story building will be brick and milled stone. The plaza will have a sign in front. Each of the units will have signage above the store’s door. According to plans, the site will have one entrance and exit, with parking behind the building.
In June, Hyun took his plan to Marysville’s Design Review Board.
Members of the board expressed concern about some of the materials that would be used for the building, some of the lighting to be used and the sign for the plaza.
Hyun asked the Design Review Board to table the application until July.
City Engineer Jeremy Hoyt said that once the design review board has approved the project, Hyun will need to get a building permit through the county and engineering review through the city.
