The Union County Health Department can now provide COVID-19 booster shots to those who received any type of the vaccine.
In accordance with CDC guidance, booster doses are now approved for eligible individuals who received Pfizer, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines.
UCHD has not received the Moderna vaccine.
However, the CDC now allows for “mix and match” of different types of COVID-19 vaccine brands for booster doses.
For example, an eligible person who received a Moderna first and second dose at least six months ago can receive a Pfizer booster.
Officials from the Union County Health Department encourage all individuals interested in receiving a “mix and match” booster to speak with their doctor to determine if it is right choice for them. UCHD medical staff cannot advise as to whether “mix and match” is appropriate in individual cases.
Health department officials said several facts about the Pfizer vaccine may be helpful to know when considering a “mix and match” booster.
The Pfizer booster dose is the same vaccine and same dose as the first and second shots.
Additionally, Pfizer booster shots can be administered at the same time as the flu shot or other vaccines. There is no minimum interval that is required between a Pfizer COVID vaccination and other vaccination.
Pfizer booster shots are available by appointment. They can be scheduled at www.uchdclinic.org or by calling (937) 642-2053.
Drive-thru clinics at the Union County Fairgrounds will be offered through the end of October and will move back to in-office services at the health department, 940 London Avenue, in November.
Those receiving the booster shot are asked to bring their vaccination card and photo ID to the appointment.
The health department is currently reviewing its ability to provide Johnson and Johnson booster doses. Officials said more information will be available “in the next one to two weeks.”
