Catherine “Katie” Marie Smallwood, age 95, of Marysville, died Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23, 2023 at Prestige Gardens.
A 1946 graduate of Allen Center High School, she retired in June 1988 from Marysville Kroger’s where she was an associate for 36 years. She was a part of the grocery store team at the first three Marysville locations, Fifth and Plum Streets, Five Points and Marysville Plaza.
Of the Methodist faith, she enjoyed meeting her former work friends for breakfast monthly. She also liked playing cards, shopping and traveling. Katie and her family also loved spending time at their cottage at Indian Lake.
Taking senior citizen trips were a favorite hobby with jaunts to casinos or shows. She also liked playing Bingo with friends.
Gardening was a great joy of hers – whether flowers or vegetables- and canning or preparing family meals, even though she was a “connoisseur of snacks” and junk food.
She will be most remembered as “Kroger Katie,” a fun-loving, gracious, helpful and smiling soul.
She was born February 2, 1928 in West Virginia to the late Charles and Stella Hobbs McCarty. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death on October 25, 1979 by her husband, John G. Smallwood, Jr.; her longtime companion, Donald Hart; a daughter-in-law, Carlene Smallwood; and her brother, Wayne McCarty.
She is survived by her sons, Gary A. (Kimberly) Smallwood of Marysville and Jerry L. (Denise) Smallwood, of North Lewisburg; her grandchildren, Czajka Smallwood of Marysville, Craig (Summer) Smallwood of Broadway, Corey (Clayton) Smallwood of Marysville, Cassie Smith of Delaware, Johnny (Jen) Smith of Delaware, Shawn (Elisha) Stokes of Cable and Shane (Laura) Stokes of North Lewisburg; her great-grandchildren, Kalia (Jamey), Mariah (Michael), Nikki, Breanna, Aleah, Alissa (Jacob), Ami (Daniel), Kolby (Montana); 18 great-great grandchildren; and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at Underwood Funeral Home where the family will receive friends beginning at 4 p.m.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Oakdale Cemetery.
