Donald W. “Don” DeGood, 88, a lifetime resident of Marysville, died Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017, at Prestige Gardens in Marysville.
A retired insurance agent, he was an associate at Prudential Insurance Company for 30 years and retired in 1990. Prior to his insurance career, he was a home delivery milkman for Elm Dairy, located on Maple Street in Marysville. It was at the dairy store where he met the love of his life and his future wife, Rosalyn “Rose” Dasher DeGood.
As a youth, he was raised in the Marysville Congregational Church and worked at Davis Chair Factory and Cussin and Fern variety store. A 1947 graduate of Marysville High School, he served in the United States Army during the Korean War as a medic in the First Cavalry Division. He was a member of American Legion Union Post 79. He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served on its school board and church council. He was also a charter member of the Marysville Jaycees and the last living charter member of the Heart of Ohio Fish and Game Club.
He was a longtime member and past president of the Union County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society and volunteered at Memorial Hospital for 20 years. He accrued more than 5,000 hours helping with Memorial Hospital’s Mobile Meals program and tended to the Morey Center visitor desk. Known as “Uncle Donnie” to many, he will especially be remembered as a devoted New York Yankees fan, and for his hearty laugh and sense of humor.
He was born on July 12, 1929, on Third Street in Marysville, to the late Huber and Lorena Stultz DeGood. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Max and Marjorie DeGood; sisters and brothers-in-law, Thelma and Burl Hesson and Marguerite and Donald Smith; nephew, John DeGood; and nieces, Pam Smith, Jayne Overfield and Bonnie Shepherd.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rosalyn “Rose” Dasher DeGood, whom he married on March 3, 1957, at Trinity Lutheran Church; daughters, Sally (Gary) Dray of Fort Jennings and Donna (Randy) Weitzel of Orlando, Florida; granddaughters, Marcy (John) Roets and Andrea Dray; sister-in-law, Joyce Dasher; and many nieces, nephews and loving friends.
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. tonight at Underwood Funeral Home. The Rev. Barry Scott will officiate funeral services at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, with burial to follow at Oakdale Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Union County Military Funeral Honor Guard.
