Fred A. Young, 70, of Marysville, died Saturday, July 15, 2017, at his home on the family farm following a long battle with cancer.
As a lifetime resident of Marysville, he attended Northwestern High School in Raymond. He retired as a factory worker from Tecumseh in Marion after 18 years, and Honda Transmission after 20 years.
He was an Army veteran who served in Vietnam. He was in the Army Special Forces and Army Security Agency as an SP5 in Thailand. He was active in the military for four years and served six years in the Army Reserves. He was extraordinarily proud of his military service, and if he was ever anything, he was a soldier.
As a lifelong farmer, he enjoyed animals, especially his pet pig, Arthur, and his chicken, Feather Feet. He was always a hard worker and never a quitter. In his spare time, he enjoyed cutting wood and making furniture. He delighted in purchasing items that were “As Seen on TV,” as well as the classifieds. In later years, he became an avid Ohio State football fan, spending his time watching games on television, as well as watching westerns and Fox News.
He particularly enjoyed his friends from Mosier IGA and the staff at Marysville Memorial Hospital Oncology Department, as well as other departments. During his visits at Memorial Hospital, he liked having three strawberry milkshakes.
He was born on June 23, 1947, in Kenton, to the late Fredrick and Frances A. Justice Young. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Charles A. Bowersmith.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Irene “Lucy” Nickelson Young; children, Lucy I. (Scott) Carpenter, Anita (Rick) Wheeler and Fred E. Young, all of Marysville; grandchildren, Garrett Carpenter and his special friend, Jessica, Hunter Carpenter, Annie and Wyatt Wheeler, Haley and Brayden Young, Taylor Young and her fiancé Travis; step-grandson, Michael (Megan) Fisher; siblings, Ernie C. (Rosemary) Young, Fritzi (Patrick) Alltop and Jeff (JoAnn) Young; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill Nickelson and his friend Cheryl of Marysville, Glen Nickelson of Bellefontaine, Joe Nickelson of Columbus, Frank Nickelson and his friend Rose of Springfield, Jane (Ed) Foreman of Caledonia, Dan (Teresa) Nickelson of St. Paris, Bob (Pam) Nickelson of Richmond, Virginia and Linda (Kip) Stangel of Eagle River, Alaska; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Ingram Funeral Home, where the Rev. Ed Beeson will officiate funeral services at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will follow at Oakdale Cemetery, where the Union County Honor Guard will provide full military honors.
