Gail J. Bump, 89, of Marysville, passed away early Wednesday morning, January 3, 2024, in the care of Hospice of Central Ohio at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
Gail was born July 15, 1934, at the family home in North Lewisburg to the late Winters McKinley and Gladys V. (Bright) Bump. A 1952 graduate of Marysville High School, Gail went on to serve his country in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany as a helicopter and airplane mechanic. Very handy and able to fix virtually anything that needed fixing, he began working for Thorpe Motors in Marysville. Eventually he worked for his good friend, Jim Carney at Carneys in Marysville before working for and retiring from McAuliffe’s as a manager after 32 years. Gail simply just loved to work, and his ornery personality was infectious to all those around him.
In his earlier years, Gail was an active member of the NHRA, where he helped build and work on cars. He loved to drag race, and took turns racing cars he built with his former partner, Bob Daniels. After marrying the former Rita A. Barker in 1988, they began a love for staying at bed-n-breakfasts and antique shopping. He also enjoyed music of all kinds and was very proud of his vinyl collection, listening to everything from country to blue grass and beyond.
Gail is survived by his wife of 35 years, Rita; children Steve (Kelly) Bump of Marysville, Jackie (Greg) Otto of Defiance, Kristi (Mike) Mullaney of Raymond; step-children Laura (Troy) Schultz of Ostrander and Mark (Lisa) Poling of Lenoir, North Carolina; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Along with his parents, Gail was also preceded in death by his siblings.
Private family services will be held at Oakdale Cemetery. In Gail’s memory, contributions may be made to the Union County Humane Society, 16540 County Home Rd., Marysville, or Ohio Hospice in care of the funeral home.
