George Michael Schacherbauer, 65, of East Lansing, Michigan, died Friday, May 4, 2018, in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
He graduated from Fairbanks High School in 1970 and from Otterbein University with a Bachelor’s of science degree in 1974. He graduated from The Ohio State University with a Master’s of arts degree in 1978. He enjoyed traveling and has visited all the states, more than 50 countries and six continents.
He participated in live theatre as both an actor and director in more than 100 productions. He was named “best actor” by the Central Ohio Theatre Critics Circle. He served many years with the Ohio Community Theatre Association and four terms as state board president. He was inducted into the Ohio Community Theatre Association Hall of Fame in 2017.
He retired after a 30-year career as an elementary school teacher for Westerville City Schools. In 2008, he completed his flight attendant training for Northwest Airlines and Delta Air Lines. He worked as a flight attendant for 18 months after his retirement.
He was born July 22, 1952, in Columbus, to the late Paul and Leatrice (Markel) Schacherbauer.
He is survived by his partner of 11 years, Don Savolainen of East Lansing; sister, Paula (Terry) Nicol of Milford Center; niece, Brooke (John) Vozar of Magnolia; and nephew, Ryan Nicol of Milford Center.
The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ferguson Funeral Home, 202 E. Main Street (Route 161 W.), Plain City. The Rev. Liz Miller will officiate a funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Jerome Township Cemetery, Plain City.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cancer Society, Kidney Foundation or Ohio Community Theatre Association in care of the funeral home.
