John E. Winkle, 79, of Marysville, died Saturday evening, Oct. 7, 2017, at Memorial Gables following an extended illness with his family at his side.
He was retired from Honda of America but had formerly worked as a machinist at Howard Supply Co. and Marysville Automotive and owned and operated his own machine shop, Union Automotive, which he sold before his employment at Honda. He was a 59-year member of First Congregational United Church of Christ and attended Millcreek Church of Christ.
Mechanically inclined and a master woodworker, he was accomplished as a mechanic and had even built airplanes for himself, both models and full size. His abilities in woodworking were also exemplified in the furniture he built and his wooden model trains.
He loved spending time with his daughters and their families, along with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Fishing with his friends and family was one of his favorite pastimes. He and his wife, Mary Ann, spent 20 years in Florida and made many great friends along the way. They also enjoyed traveling from coast-to-coast and across the water. He was always a great supporter of his daughter’s and grandchildren’s activities and hobbies.
He was born on July 24, 1938, in Marysville, to the late John and Valeta Justice Winkle.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, the former Mary Ann Fogle, whom he married on June 21, 1957, at Pharisburg United Methodist Church; daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Lloyd Stillings and Wendy and Jim Knox; grandchildren, Andy (Ashley) Kandel, Ben Kandel, Kyle Knox and Jessica (Javier) Perez; great-grandchildren, Gracie, Garrett and Alivia Kandel and Ruby Ann Perez; sister, Donna Morelock; brothers and sister-in-law, Jerry Fogle, and Carroll and Marilyn Fogle; many nieces and nephews; and faithful companion cat, Sophie.
Calling hours will be Wednesday, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Ingram Funeral Home, where The Revs. Jack Knox and Linda Meredith will officiate funeral services at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will follow at Broadway Cemetery. His pallbearers will include Andy and Ben Kandel, Kyle Knox, Lloyd Stillings, Jim Knox and Javier Perez.
