Phillip N. “Phil” Schertzer, 72, of Marysville, died Tuesday evening, Sept. 12, 2017, at Select Specialty Hospital in Columbus with his loving family by his side.
He retired in 2005 as a lab technician at Nestle. An army veteran of the Vietnam War, he received the rank of SP4. He was a member of the Mount Carmel Masonic Lodge in Richwood and was a 32nd degree Mason, the Union County Shrine Club, the Aladdin Shrine Club, the Scottish Rite F&AM and the Marion Flywheel car club. A very social and outgoing person, he met with friends at the Pit Stop in Pharisburg every morning for coffee, met his coffee clan at McDonalds every Wednesday and had breakfast with the retirees from Nestle the first Thursday of each month.
He was born on Jan. 31, 1945, in Broadway, to the late James and Virginia DeGood Schertzer. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Paul Schertzer.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Peggy J. Cantrell, whom he married on May 22, 1966, at the Marysville First United Methodist Church; son, Mark Schertzer; brother, Pearl (Barbara) Schertzer of West Mansfield; five sisters-in-law; four brothers-in-law; special friends, Dale and Sharon Surber, Beverly and Kenneth Breece and Bryant and Michelle Heflin; special niece, Anne Dingey; and many nieces, nephews and good friends.
Calling hours will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Ingram Funeral Home, where the Revs. Steve Anstine and Terry Schertzer will officiate funeral services at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will follow at Broadway Cemetery, where the Union County Honor Guard will provide full military honors. Masonic services will be on Friday at 8 p.m. following calling hours.
In his memory, contributions may be made to the Kennard Church of the Nazarene, Shriners Hospital for Children or the Ohio Masonic Home in care of the funeral home.
