Stanley Arthur Cordell, Jr., 75, of Chambersburg, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020.
Stanley loved Jesus, his family, hunting, fishing and preaching.
Stanley liked to say he had the heart of a monk and loved to study science, math and politics but especially the Scriptures. Stanley loved Jesus and trusted Him with all his heart for his salvation. It was his mission in life to share the good news of Jesus’ love. He was an ordained pastor with the Churches of God General Conference. A voracious reader, Stanley was an intellectual man and a conservative Republican. He enjoyed academic debate and was a phenomenal shooter. He enjoyed watching a variety of sports, political commentaries and Gaither musicals. He was the first Eagle Scout in Franklin County, Pennsylvania.
Stanley graduated as part of Chambersburg High School’s Class of 1962. He attended Bob Jones University, where he was a preacher boy and participated in the theatre program and Messiah College, where he was part of the soccer, basketball and debate teams. He earned his Doctorate from Bethany Theological Seminary.
Stanley got his first job before he was a teenager, working as a stock boy at a local grocery store. He worked for the U.S. government for a time, before returning to Chambersburg to work at Grove Manufacturing for many years before answering his call to full-time ministry. Stanley pastored churches in Chambersburg, New Grenada, Walnut Grove, Doubling Gap, Round Knob and Six Mile Run, Pennsylvania.
He was born Nov. 29, 1944, to the late Stanley A. and Adeline Schultz Cordell, in Chambersburg.
In addition to his parents, Stanley is proceeded in death by a wife, Georgelyn Louise Morton Cordell; a brother, Jerry; a sister, Mary Lou Benedick as well as her husband Donald; and friend, Steve (Pat) Mickley.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce; children, Jody Bingham of Kentucky, Michelle (John) Appel of Maryland, Staci Lynn (Rob) Hahn of Florida, Mac (Melissa) Cordell of Ohio, Nikki and Joel Cordell of Pennsylvania; grandchildren Alexa and Ben Appel, Thomas Robert Hahn and Jonah, Benjamin, Levi, Jac and Marshall Cordell; an ex-wife, Mary Gingerich Martin; friend Donald (Darlene) McCurdy of Shippensburg; and nephews Gary (Anne) and Van (Barry Kline) Benedick and their families.
