School drug testing discussed
Last week, the Richwood Police Department's canine, Col. Klink 
visited the North Union High School parking lot, sniffing out drugs. 
When the search was complete, three vehicles in the lot, were singled 
out by the drug trained dog. Upon a search of each vehicle, no drugs 
were found at the time of the search. School officials contacted 
parents of the students whose cars were searched, so that they were 
aware of the procedure.

Village council considers benefit of auxiliary police
Richwood Council briefly discussed doing away with its auxiliary 
police officers at Monday night’s meeting.

Community raises funds to help Haiti residents
Last December, four Richwood area residents, Jeff Hoffman, Jim 
Monroe, Steve Price and Cecil Swartzentruber and four men from the 
Marion area, traveled to Haiti to complete the build of a non-
denominational church. In January, a devasting earthquake nearly 
destroyed the city of Port au Prince, leaving thousands of people 
homeless. Much of life in the area is living on the poverty level, 
with many of the area children living in orphanages.

Audit indicates theft of taxpayers money
Auditor of State Mary Taylor released separate audits last week of 
Washington Township and North Union Local School District. Reports 
identify former township fiscal officer Valerie Cox of stealing 
nearly $38,000.

York Township has new recycling project
The North Central Ohio Solid Waste District has announced a new 
recycling effort for the residents of York Township.

HB19 – a huge step in  preventing dating violence

The recent passage of House Bill 19 (HB19) will have an enormous 
impact on the prevention of dating violence and consequently, 
domestic violence.

Police warn resident about dangers of playing on ice
The Richwood Police Department has received numerous calls from local 
residents who have seen children playing on the ice at Richwood Lake. 
For the public’s safety, Police Chief Monte Asher states anyone 
caught on the ice at Richwood Lake will be criminally charged.

U.C. Red Cross needs your help
The Union County Chapter of the American Red Cross is a humanitarian 
organization that provides immediate relief to victims of disaster, 
right here in Union County. They show up and offer support during 
fires, vehicular accidents, and teach residents how to prevent, 
prepare for and cope with emergencies.

Recent bloodmobile deemed a success
Richwood First United Methodist Church hosted a bloodmobile on 
January 18th and collected 55 productive units.

Let’s celebrate National FFA Week
North Union FFA  will celebrate National FFA Week Feb. 20-27, 2010.  
“Lead Out Loud” is the theme this year as members pledge to show off 
what makes them premier leaders in their schools and communities. 
More than half a million members around the nation will participate 
in National FFA Week activities at the local and state levels.

Union County Humane Society welcomes new board members
The Union County Humane Society (UCHS)  recently  elected two new 
board members from the community. Gail DeGood- Guy of Richwood and 
Shelby Daniels of Marysville, will fill the 2010 to 2012 term. UCHS 
board members work closely with Executive Director Steffen Baldwin to 
provide strategic planning, direction and leadership to the 
organization while ensuring that the private nonprofit organization 
continues to raise funds and operate efficiently and effectively.

Is your teen taking the “teen safe driver pledge?”
All parents get nervous when their children become of age to take 
driver’s education classes, knowing they will be sharing the roadways 
with millions of other drivers. You worry about them meeting drunk 
drivers, bad weather conditions, and many other situations that are 
out of your control.

Council awards contract to rehab new administration building

Richwood Village Council awarded the contracts to perform renovation 
work at the old Mills Chevrolet building on North Franklin Street.

Union County Health Dept. announces clinics Seasonal and H1N1 flu shot clinic scheduled
The Union County Health Department will hold a flu clinic in 
Richwood, Monday, Feb. 22. The event will be held at the Northern 
Union Fire and EMS Department, 602 N. Franklin St. from 10 a.m. to 2 
p.m.

County Comprehensive Plan Survey Extension
Currently, Logan-Union-Champaign Regional Planning Commission (LUC), 
with support of the Union County Commissioners, is conducting a 
survey for the residents of Union County. This survey is a chance for 
the citizens to provide feedback on how they would like to see the 
county develop.

Number crunching, dollar stretching

$51,000 coming to Richwood-based programs
Clipping coupons. Bargain-hunting. Watching for sales.
Much like you work to stretch your family’s budget when money is 
tight, United Way of Union County volunteers worked to stretch donor 
dollars in their recently completed allocations process. And while 
they weren’t exactly discount shopping for social services, they did 
employ a new funding process that will make the United Way dollars go 
farther this year.

North Union Hall of Pride inducts two new members
North Union Local Schools want to recognize and honor graduates of 
Richwood and North Union High Schools for their outstanding 
accomplishments after their high school years in areas of athletics, 
business, education, humanitarian pursuits and service to school or 
community. Members of the Hall of Pride selection committee have 
announced this year’s winners.

Union County star participates in “Puppy Bowl”
Many sports fans are gearing up for the annual football Super Bowl, 
which airs Sunday, Feb. 7. Fans gather to eat and drink, wear their 
favorite team’s jersey and cheer their team to victory. Many  watch 
just to see the interesting commercials between plays.

Library forced to change hours of operation
Like most businesses across the country, operational budgets have 
taken a big hit the last 12 months. Business owners make cuts, 
shorten hours and do what is necessary to keep their doors open.
