Triad’s varsity softball team won its opening game of the 2019 season on Thursday with a 7-5 verdict over Fairbanks.
The Lady Cardinals got out of the gate early with a trio of runs in the home half of the first inning.
FHS put its first run on the board in the top of the fourth, but Triad grabbed a 7-1 margin by the end of the fifth.
The Lady Panthers plated two runs in each of the sixth and seventh, but their rally fell short.
Both teams had a potent offense as Triad rapped 10 hits and FHS finished with nine.
Ali Cox led Triad with three hits, while Kendell Hughes and Gracie Sheets both had two.
Hughes drove in three runs.
Anna Higbee had three hits for Fairbanks, while Madi Montenaro added two.
Joni Russell, who fanned seven, was the winning pitcher for the Cardinals.
Julia Cheney started and hurled four innings for FHS. She yielded four hits.
April Ward pitched in relief for the Lady Panthers and was tagged with the loss.
Triad will play a doubleheader at Greenville on Saturday, while FHS (2-4) is scheduled to host Pleasant today.

Wildcats win
North Union’s baseball team upped its record to 2-1 with a 2-1 win over Kenton Ridge.
The game was tied at 1-1 after the first inning. The Wildcats scored the winning run in the fifth.
Anthony Padovano, Josh Cahill, Trevyn Feasel, Micah Orr and Ashden Turrill each had one hit for the Wildcats.
Feasel and Turrill both drove in runs.
Kase Orahood pitched a complete-game victory for NU. He scattered four hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter.
The Wildcats will host Mt. Gilead on Saturday.

Lady Cats triumph
North Union’s softball team opened its season with an 8-5 victory over Lancaster.
The Lady Cats held a 3-0 lead after two innings and took a 4-2 margin in the fourth.
NU plated four runs in the home half of the sixth to seal the victory.
Josie Duncan had four of North Union’s 13 hits and drove in three runs.
Kennedy Ruhl, Kayla Sedgewick, Laney Converse and Madison Amstutz each had two hits.
Ruhl and Amstutz each had two RBIs.
Destiny Reebel scored three runs.
Duncan went the distance in the circle. She allowed seven hits, struck out nine and issued a trio of free passes.
The Lady Cats will travel to Kenton Ridge today.
