A rugged battle ended in a 42-42 deadlock between the Marysville and Mason high school girls wrestling squads.
The Lady Monarchs, however, were declared the winner based on the criteria of most individual match points scored.
The teams finally met on the mat Saturday morning after the contest had been postponed from an earlier date.
Girls wrestling is a club sports. Neither team had enough athletes to fill all 14 weight classes.
Grapplers from Central Crossing, Hilliard Bradley and Massillon Perry were on hand to fill those empty spots.
Lady Monarch results were as follows:
-106: Emma Swart (MHS) pinned Isabella Naranjo (M), 16 seconds;
-116: Cali Leng (MHS) toppled Camy Etheridge (M), 3:05;
-121: Julie Sung (M) put Maddie Adelsberger (MHS) to the mat in 3:42;
-126: Emily Segner (MHS) was pinned in 4:18 by Paige Foster (M);
131: Mia Oribello (MHS) needed only 14 seconds to put Madilyn Hunt (M) to the mat;
-137: Lauren Sloboda (MHS) won by forfeit over Mason; dropped a match by a 4:27 pinfall to Haily Amador (Hilliard Bradley);
-143: Katie Palmer (MHS) pinned Emma Schatzel (M) in 3:30;
-150: Sophia Smegal (MHS) won by forfeit;
-160: Aubrey Reese (MHS) lost by a 1:41 pinfall to Emily Rodriguez (M);
-170: Olana Chapman (MHS) scored a 1:11 pin over Amara Hedges (M);
-189: Olivia Ishmael (MHS) was pinned in 2:42 by Bonu Gofurjonova (M);
-235: Heily Ramos (MHS) lost by a 2:21 pinfall to Mady Duvall (M).
There were several extra matches (not included in the varsity result) held.
Those results were as follows:
-106: Swart (MHS) put Mason’s Tanushree Upadhyay to the mat in 2:52;
-116: Nevaya Natividad (MHS) needed just 1:05 to topple Etheridge (M);
-131: Hunt (M) pinned Isabella Deahl (MHS), 2:14;
-160: Reese (MHS) fell to Addison Williams (Perry) in a 3:24 pin.
“As girls wrestling in Ohio continues to grow, events like dual meets are going to continue to be important,” said MHS coach Shawn Andrews. “It was exciting for our girls to be able to compete under the spotlight in their home gym for the first time this season.
“With two weeks to go before the start of their postseason, Saturday’s dual revealed there is still a great deal to work on before the district and state tournaments.”
