It took six days to finish the job, but Marysville’s varsity softball squad ripped Thomas Worthington, 12-1.
The contest, which was played on the Cardinals’ diamond, began last Friday.
It was suspended in the fourth inning due to inclement weather.
The contest resumed on Thursday with MHS leading, 6-1, in the visitors’ portion of the fourth.
Marysville (22-2) took a 1-0 edge in the first.
Lexi Williams reached base on a fielding miscue and raced home on Jalynn Young’s double.
MHS plated four runs in the second.
Haley Winans and Abri Schmutz ripped back-to-back base hits.
Both scored on Williams’ two-bagger.
Abby Christian brought Williams home with a double.
She then scored when Young laced a base hit.
Abby Gindlesberger blasted a solo homer in the top of the third to give Marysville a 6-0 lead.
The Cardinals scored their lone run in the third on a walk and double against MHS pitcher Tareyn Born.
The Lady Monarchs piled five additional runs on the board during their portion of the fourth.
Schmutz singled and Williams reached base on an error.
Consecutive singles by Christian and Young drove in runs for an 8-1 advantage.
With one down, Gindlesberger doubled in two more runs for a 10-1 lead.
MHS’ 11th run scored after a Cardinal error.
Born put Thomas Worthington down in order during the bottom of the fourth.
Williams, Marysville’s shortstop, climbed the ladder to catch a line drive for the first out.
She then caught a popup over her shoulder for the second.
“Lexi made a couple of nice plays,” said Monarch head coach Jennifer Segner-Maxwell.
Born fanned the final batter to end the inning.
Williams’ solo dinger led off the top of the fifth and stretched the lead to 12-1.
Christian followed with a double.
Worthington pitcher Sophie Rosh, however, coaxed three outs to end the inning.
The Cardinals got a runner on board in the home half of the fifth after an MHS error.
That runner, however, was picked off then Young, Marysville’s catcher, rifled the ball to Winans for the tag at first base.
A grounder and fly ball ended the game on the run rule.
Born allowed just one hit over five innings.
She struck out three and issued a pair of free passes.
“This was one of Tareyn’s best games of the season,” said Segner-Maxwell. “She did a good job of getting ahead in the count.
“Both she and Abby (Christian) are doing a better job of mixing up their pitches and working in the change-up,” said the coach. “They are becoming pitchers, instead of just throwers.”
Marysville will return to Division I tournament action on Monday.
The Lady Monarchs, the No. 4 seed, will host No. 29 Hilliard Bradley at 5:30 p.m.
Bradley upset No. 10 Canal Winchester, 5-4, earlier this week.
