Marysville’s varsity softball squad flexed its muscles and remained tied with Olentangy for first place in the Ohio Capital Conference Cardinal Division.
A home run-laden 11-1 victory Monday evening over Thomas Worthington pushed the Lady Monarchs’ conference mark to 8-1, which is the same as the Braves.
The local team saw three round-trippers clear the fence as it improved its overall record to 13-7.
Mya Segner blasted a two-run dinger during an eight-run first inning.
Ally Clementz did the same to account for Marysville’s two runs in the second.
Sienna Hutchins got into the act with a solo shot during the home half of the third.
MHS head coach Jennifer Segner-Maxwell was happy to see the offensive fireworks.
“We jumped on them early and that took some of the pressure off Brooklyn (freshman pitcher Gamby),” she said. “Brooklyn’s change-up was very effective and she threw a great game.”
Gamby yielded four hits during the five-inning contest that was shortened by the run rule.
She fanned seven and issued a pair of free passes.
The Cardinals (3-16) plated their lone run in the top of the first.
With one down, Grace Schmidt walked and eventually scored on a hit from Aly Taylor. Taylor went to second on the play.
The inning ended when Thomas Worthington lined into a double play.
Right fielder Gwen Dyal snagged a line drive and threw to second base to double up courtesy runner Delaney Jackson for the third out.
The Lady Monarchs got down to business during the home portion of the initial inning.
Hutchins singled and Segner followed with her homer.
“I think that’s my fourth (homer) of the season,” said Segner. “I’ve been able to see and hit the ball pretty well.”
Gamby later drove in a run with a single and Abby Strahm singled in two scores.
Additional ribbies came from AJ McAdow and Hutchins as the Lady Monarchs sent 12 batters to the plate.
Armed with an 8-1 advantage, Gamby kept the Cardinals off the scoreboard over the next four innings.
“Brooklyn was able to relax with the big lead,” said Segner-Maxwell.
With one down in the bottom of the second, Camryn Harbold drew a walk from Thomas Worthington starter Sophie Newsom.
Clementz followed with her two-run shot that elevated Marysville to a 10-1 advantage.
“The pitch was low and outside,” said Clementz in talking about the third varsity homer of her career. “I saw it pretty well.”
Hutchins, who has been hitting the cover off the ball since coming back from a shoulder injury, continued her hot streak.
She had two hits in three at-bats.
The MHS junior did not play in the field against the Cardinals.
“I’m just taking a break from playing defense for a few games,” said Hutchins. “I want to be good to go later in the season.”
