Fairbanks also triumphs in girls games
Jonathan Alder’s girls basketball team scored a huge 63-56 victory at Columbus Bishop Watterson on Monday.
It was a battle of teams ranked in the Associated Press state poll.
The Lady Pioneers went into the contest ranked ninth in Division II, while the Eagles were fourth in D-I.
It was Watterson’s second loss in 18 games, while JA upped its record to 16-2.
The contest was a battle for the first three quarters.
Alder (which will host London on Wednesday) held a 20-19 edge after the first stanza.
Watterson took a 36-35 lead at halftime and a 49-47 margin after three quarters.
The Lady Pioneers clamped down on defense during the fourth set and limited the Eagles to just seven points.
Mary Ferrito scored 18 points to lead Alder, while Melissa Walbom added 14.

Pyers leads FHS
Gracie Pyers tallied 15 points as Fairbanks’ girls rolled past Ridgemont, 46-30.
The Lady Panthers’ defense limited the Golden Gophers to an ice-cold 22 percent shooting from the floor.
FHS held Ridgemont scoreless during the opening set and took a 13-0 lead into the ensuing period.
The Golden Gophers finally got untracked and pulled to within 19-12 by halftime.
Fairbanks (7-9) took a 27-18 margin into the fourth quarter.
Elaina Lahmers, who scored 10 points, led FHS (which will host West Jefferson on Thursday) with six rebounds, while Carly Lehman tallied four assists.

Lady Cardinals fall
Triad’s girls slipped to 2-16 with a 68-34 loss to Springfield.
The Lady Cardinals (who will host Mechanicsburg on Thursday) started out well and led, 12-10, at the end of the first quarter.
Springfield held a 25-20 edge at the turn and pulled away during the second half.
Triad trailed, 49-25, by the conclusion of the third set.
Cati LeVan led the Lady Cardinals with 16 points.
Springfield’s Mickayla Perdue topped all scorers by pouring in 33.
