Friday evening marked another wrestling-basketball doubleheader at Marysville High School.
The action began at 6 p.m. when the Monarch grapplers took on Ashland under the spotlight of the school’s gymnasium.
MHS’ mat match, which resulted in a 40-24 loss to the Arrows, was followed by the boys varsity basketball squad’s victory over Central Crossing.
Zachary Pfarr got the battle under way with a pinfall victory the Monarchs.
He put Korbyn Jones of Ashland to the mat in 4:32.
The Arrows, though, wiped out Marysville’s 6-0 lead when Milan Parobeck (113) notched a pin.
He put Marysville’s Ethan Skiles to the mat in 1:25.
MHS had to forfeit the 120-pound bout, which gave Ashland a 12-6.
The Monarchs narrowed their deficit to 12-10 with a triumph at 126.
Nathan Thompson of MHS scored an 11-3 major decision over Colin Rohr.
The Monarchs climbed to a 17-12 advantage with victories in the 132 and 138-pound bouts.
Harely Crouso came through with a 22-11 major decision for MHS at 132. He had little trouble winning the match over Griffin Adkins.
Lincoln Heard’s bout at 138 resulted in a 4-1 victory over Adam Cook.
Jack Golla of MHS fell to Jayden Jones by a 5-1 count in the 145-pound classification.
That pulled the Arrows to within 17-15.
Erryl Will (152) gave the Monarchs a bit of breathing room with an 11-3 major decision over Chase Dillow.
Ashland, however, won five of the final six matches to secure the team victory.
Those final bouts were as follows:
-160: John Metzger (A) beat Jayden Simmons (M) by a 9-0 major decision;
-170: Porter Lane (A) dec. Garrett Seger (M), 8-2;
-182: Jakob Beverly (A) pinned Parker Reese (M), :31;
195: Benjamin Bickerstaff (M) scored a 6-5 verdict over Dakota Pitz (A);
-220: Chase Blessing (A) pinned CJ Grose (M), 1:17;
-285: Jake Bever (A) pinned Zach McMinn (M), 1:34.
“Regardless of the results, I think we looked better than we did last week,” said MHS head coach Shawn Andrews. “I saw our biggest improvement in our conditioning and a lot of our younger guys appeared to be less nervous during this match.
“We’ve just got to do a better job of finishing periods in matches and wrestling better defensively,” he said. “Our goal is to just get better every day.”
