The Marysville High School boys’ varsity lacrosse team started its season with a couple of setbacks.
The Monarchs fell to Delaware Hayes, 11-3, and to Granville, 16-4.
season this past weekend on the less-than-to-be-desire note losing Friday to Delaware Hayes,
“It was a reasonable first half,” MHS head coach Zac Engel said of the Hayes contest. “It was really sloppy play in the second half.”
Engel noted there were too many penalties throughout the duration of the first game, which benefited the Pacers on their end.
“That was really our downfall,” he said.
Scoring the first goals of the season for Marysville were Ben Durey (two) and Isaac Tocci.
Some aspects of the team’s game improved against Granville, but the outcome still resulted in a loss.
While the scoreboard shared a different story, Engel emphasized there was “good lacrosse” during the first half of play for Marysville.
“We played a really solid team,” Engel noted, regarding Granville’s performance.
With a just a two-point game near the end of the first half, things began to unravel in the following half.
“It got away from us in the second half,” said the MHS coach. “But I was pretty proud of the guys for the effort in the first half and competing with a team that in the past we wouldn’t have been competitive with.
“There is a lot to take away from that game.”
Penalty minutes were down, compared to the first game for the Monarchs.
The team also showed signs of improvement when it came to ground balls and clearing against Granville.
“The score doesn’t really reflect where the game was for most of it,” Engel said.
In the second game, the Monarchs also had to deal with another opposition – that being mother nature.
Engel said the rain and wind played factors.
The Monarchs are 0-2 to start out the season.
Durey has scored five goals and Tocci has added two.
Griffin Ahlstrom recorded 19 saves and Sean McGee had one.
The Monarchs are slated to host Gahanna, today at 6:30 p.m.
