Marysville’s girls golf squad has a solid group of returning lettermen for the 2021 season.
Those veterans are senior Cassi VanDyke, juniors Avery Prohaska and Emily Williams and sophomore Reese Cordonnier.
“I’m looking for Cassi and Avery to shoot in the 80’s (for 18 holes) this year,” said coach Juliet Litzel. “Emily and Reese should shoot in the low-to-mid 90’s.”
The Lady Monarchs finished fourth in the six-team Ohio Capital Conference Central Division during the 2020 campaign. They averaged 373 for 18-hole events during conference action.
Newcomers to the varsity team include freshman Allee Forrider.
She began playing golf for the first time last December and has the potential to shoot in the 90’s.
She is currently in the fifth spot on the team.
A pair of additional freshmen have earned spots on the varsity.
They are Camryn McGlenn and Ava Jackson.
“Having four returning lettermen is a huge advantage in that they bring so much experience,” said Litzel. “The girls look out for each other and have taken in the younger ones.
“Leadership and the drive to do well are definite strong points for our team,” she said.
Litzel said the OCC will once again be very strong.
New Albany is the returning Division I state champion and Upper Arlington also qualified for the state tournament.
“Dublin Coffman is also in the running,” said Litzel. “We will battle with Canal Winchester and Hilliard Davidson for the fourth spot.”
MHS boys have young squad
Marysville’s boys linksmen return only two lettermen – sophomore Andrew Rabe and junior Nick Wever – to this year’s team.
“Both Nick and Andrew are driven and have a strong competitive side which has benefited them and our team,” said coach Aaron Brown. “They will be our leaders.
“I expect Andrew to be in the mid to high 70’s and Nick in the low 80’s with the ability to sneak into the 70’s.”
Rabe was a huge contributor to the varsity squad as a freshman.
“ He will be our No. 1 man this year and I look forward to seeing him compete and challenge the players at the top of our conference.
“The guys look to Andrew to set the tone on the course and they feed off his high energy and charisma,” said Brown. “Nick has put a lot of work into his game and has grown and gained strength.
“He is a consistent contributor on the team and I look forward to seeing his growth throughout the season.”
Newcomers to the varsity include senior Dayne Johnson, junior Myles Young and freshman Colten Montgomery.
“I expect Myles and Colten to both be in the lower to mid 80’s this year,” said Brown. “Both have the ability to shoot lower scores and have a great work ethic to do so.
“I expect Dayne to be in the mid-to-high 80’s.”
Brown said the young team has jelled early in the season and pushed each other to play the best they can.
He added the squad has displayed the ability to come back from bad shots and minimize mistakes.
Nine-time state champion Dublin Jerome should once again sit atop the OCC.
Thomas Worthington looks to be a strong team.
Brown feels the Monarchs should compete with Olentangy Berlin for third place in the division.
