Marysville’s girls and boys track and field teams had standout days during the second annual Upper Arlington Invitational.
The Lady Monarchs placed second, while the boys were third.
Upper Arlington won the girls meet with 124 points.
MHS was second with 87, followed by Teays Valley-78, Bexley-69, Fremont Ross-58, DeSales-51, Westerville South-48, Sylvania Northview-32, Whetstone-27, Central Crossing-25, Franklin Heights-21, Licking Heights-16, Dublin Coffman-13 and Columbus Wellington-nine.
Westerville South took top team honors in the boys meet with 108.
Cincinnati LaSalle was the runner-up with 93.5 and the Monarchs tallied 89.
MHS was followed by Dublin Coffman-81, Upper Arlington-72.5, Licking Heights-58, Fremont Ross-47, Bexley-31, DeSales-28, Whetstone-13, Teays Valley-13, Franklin Heights-10, St. Charles-nine, Columbus Wellington-three and Central Crossing-two.
Carys Gossett of MHS not only won the girls shot put, but also broke a long-standing school record.
Gossett’s heave of 38-6.25 marked one of six first-place finishes achieved by Marysville athletes during the meet.
That effort also broke the old Lady Monarch record of 38-2 that was set by Kristy Trees back in 1986.
Other first-place finishers for the Monarchs were as follows:
-Girls pole vault: Jackie Rychlik, 11-6;
-Boys 400 meter dash: Griffin Rigel, 51.31;
-Girls 1600 meter run: Bryn Hothem, 5:32.14;
-Boys 300 meter hurdles: Dylan Harper, 41.87;
-Girls 3200 meter run: Bailey Grosse, 12:00.38.
Gossett and Hothem tied for girls’ outstanding individual athlete for the meet.
They both tallied 18 points to share the honor.
Second and third-place finishers for Marysville were as follows:
Girls
-Discus: Gossett, second, 112-01;
-800 run: Hothem, second, 2:32.77.
Boys
-1600 run: Jack Flanagan, third, 4:45.34;
-110 hurdles: Roberto Galvis, second, 16.43; Cameron Smith, third, 17.48;
-4×400 relay: second in 3:34.50 (Cameron Jones, Harper, Andrew Montgomery, Rigel);
-4×800 relay: second in 8:37.89 (Rigel, Flanagan, James Heap Lane Coil).
“Overall it was an outstanding day for the teams,” said Marysville head coach Luke Sundermeier. “Carys broke the shot put record and both teams really stepped up to compete.
“At this point in the season, we are focused on competing and getting athletes in the right places in our lineup,” he said. “Coming off spring break, the Upper Arlington Invitational was a great chance to check a few boxes along the way of our progress.”
The Monarchs are scheduled to compete on Tuesday, along with Pickerington North, during a triangular meet at Hilliard Bradley.
That will be followed by the Stingel Invitational at Pickerington North on Saturday.
