Wednesday was the first day of the early signing period for high school football players going on to the Division I collegiate level.
Marysville High School offensive lineman Gavin Rohrs signed on the dotted line to continue his gridiron career at Miami University (Ohio).
“It’s always been my dream to play Division I college football,” said Rohrs, who was the top offensive lineman for the Monarchs this past season.
Rohrs, who earned first-team District and State accolades, was the veteran of an offensive line that took a few games to jell for the 12-1 Monarchs. Once the unit did, it paved the way for a backfield that rushed for more than 3,000 yards.
Rohrs, a 6-4, 305-pounder, told the Journal-Tribune on Wednesday that he had also been offered full-ride scholarships to Ball State University, The University of Toledo and Akron University.
“Miami was the last one to offer me,” he said. “I chose them because I have the opportunity to receive a great education and play for a team that has a winning tradition.
“I love the culture there and the coaches are truly amazing.”
Rohrs said he plans to study some type of engineering program, possibly electrical.
“Because of the classes I took here at Marysville, I became interested in how machines work,” he said.
“Gavin is very deserving of this opportunity,” said MHS head coach Brent Johnson.
Johnson went on to praise Rohr’s work ethic, his sense of competitiveness and his leadership qualities.
“I’m very excited for Gavin and his family,” said the coach. “He’s worked very hard for a long time for this.
“I’ve watched him grow up the past four years and he’s always had the goal to play college football.”
Rohrs said the Redhawks are bringing in two offensive tackles with the 2022 recruiting class.
“The coaches at Miami haven’t really said much about whether I’ll play as a freshman or whether I’ll redshirt,” he said. “I’m going to continue to work hard and reshape my body for college football.
“After that, we’ll see where it goes.”
Rohrs has played a key role in a Monarch program that has had a great deal of success over the past three seasons.
During that time, the team posted a 24-8 record with three Division I post-season playoff berths.
He was asked about his favorite Monarch football memory.
“I’d say winning back-to-back OCC (Ohio Capital Conference Cardinal Division) championships,” he said. “We were also the first Marysville football team to get to the regional finals as a Division I program.
“We were also the sixth Marysville team to go through a regular season unbeaten (9-0 in 2021),” Rohrs said.
“We’ve made a lot of history over the past couple of years.”
