The weatherman certainly hasn’t been kind to high school sports teams this spring.
Rain, hail, a bit of snow and cold temperatures have caused problems since the 2022 season began in late March.
Most, if not all, of the local athletic programs have had to postpone games and rearrange schedules.
It was no exception when Marysville’s varsity softball team prepared to play against Olentangy.
The Lady Monarchs took an abbreviated infield practice on their home diamond as the rain fell.
However, after consulting with the umpires, it was decided to postpone the game until Monday, with the first pitch scheduled for 5:15 p.m.
The only constructive thing MHS was able to do was honor Abby Gindlesberger on Senior Night.
The team’s starting third baseman is the lone fourth-year player on the Lady Monarchs’ roster.
Gindlesberger is batting over .460 and has a team-leading six home runs.
The MHS-Olentangy contest on Monday will take the place of the Lady Monarchs’ scheduled non-conference game at Jonathan Alder.
“We’ll try to reschedule against Jonathan Alder,” said MHS head coach Jennifer Segner-Maxwell.
Marysville needs to play the game against Olentangy since it is a conference contest.
The Lady Monarchs (20-2 overall) are 8-1 in the Ohio Capital Conference Cardinal Division.
They are tied with Olentangy Berlin for the division lead.
Marysville was in lone position of the top spot in the division until an 8-4 loss at Berlin earlier in the week.
“We hit the ball hard against Berlin, but it was right at them,” said Segner-Maxwell. “Our pitching was off that game and we just grooved the ball against a good-hitting team.”
The coach said delaying the Olentangy game until Monday won’t hurt her squad.
“We need a little break, especially after the Berlin game.
“The game against Olentangy is our final conference contest,” said Segner-Maxwell. “Olentangy Berlin’s last conference game is against Thomas Worthington.”
Berlin’s (15-3) game against Thomas Worthington (5-11) was also rained out and still needs to be played.
A win by the Lady Monarchs over Olentangy would mean they would tie with Berlin for the divisional title.
Marysville will have a busy softball week, depending upon the weather.
After hosting Olentangy on Monday, MHS will play at home against Westerville Central on Tuesday, host either Westerville South or Reynoldsburg in a Division I tournament contest on Thursday and host Cardington on Saturday, May 14.
Cardington is currently ranked No. 2 in the state coaches association poll for Division III.
Marysville is ranked fifth in the state D-I poll.
