There will be some new faces in the Marysville High School softball lineup this spring.
The Lady Monarchs graduated nine seniors (seven of whom were starters) from a squad that posted a 25-6 record and finished as the Division I regional runner-up.
Along the way, Marysville captured its second consecutive district crown and finished in the top eight among D-I schools in the state.
Returning letter winners for MHS are seniors Camryn Harbold (three), Maya Segner (three), junior Sienna Hutchins (two) and seniors Ally Clementz and Abby Strahm, both of whom have earned one letter.
Harbold, who plays first base, hit .451 with six home runs, while Segner, a second baseman, finished with a .348 batting average.
Hutchins, a shortstop, hit . 433 and drove in 17 runs during Ohio Capital Conference contests.
“All other positions are up for grabs (during the preseason),” according to Lady Monarch head coach Jennifer Segner-Maxwell.
“We have nine seniors and underclassmen who have worked to earn those open positions,” she said. “Players who will likely see playing time in the outfield are Strahm, Kallie Schweinfurth, Morgan Nevers, Ella Wood, Jaiden Hutchins and Jillian Rausch.”
All-Ohio catcher Haley Winans was among the graduate losses.
Clementz and Sydney Calhoon will see time behind the plate, as will Lauren Mobley.
A pair of the bigger graduation losses for the Lady Monarchs came in the pitching circle.
Abby Christian and Tareyn Born were the starting pitchers a year ago as seniors.
Sophomore Josie Bumgarner and freshman Brooklyn Gamby are scheduled to split time in the circle this spring.
“Defensively, we look solid despite being inexperienced,” said Segner-Maxwell. “We are also excited about our young pitchers. There is a lot of potential there and I love how they push each other at practice.”
The coach said offense could be a concern.
“Hitting is our biggest question and honestly whoever is hot with their bat will be in the lineup defensively,” said Segner-Maxwell.
