The Ohio Capital Conference Central Division opener for the Marysville High School varsity wrestling team resulted in a 78-6 victory over Westland on Thursday.
The Monarchs scored bonus-point triumphs in 12 of their 13 victories, including 11, six-point wins on either pins or forfeits.
“We knew going into the match that Westland is a team that is trying to rebuild its program,” said MHS coach Shawn Andrews. “Our focus was on our intensity and effort and as coaches we were pleased to see our guys meet our expectations.
“We know that some our toughest competition still lies in front of us,” he said. “We were fortunate to have a couple freshmen (Nathan Thompson and Lincoln Heard) make their varsity debuts, even if it was only to accept a forfeit in this case.”
The Monarchs also welcomed back senior Jake Marsh, who has missed several bouts because of a knee injury.
“We still have yet to put all 14 of our guys in the line-up, but the positive is that our team has a ‘next-man-up’ mentality,” said Andrews. “That means several of our team members have had time in the line-up.
“The concern is we need to be able to put forth 14 consistent wrestlers to maximize our end of the season goals,” he said. “Hopefully some of the guys who have had opportunities in the line-up will start to push teammates in practice in order to compete for a long-term spot.”
