Played three sports for Monarchs
Marysville High School graduate Mike Adkins compiled quite a list of athletic accomplishments during his time as a Monarch.
The title Hall of Famer can now join his other accolades.
Adkins is one of four people who will be enshrined on Friday into the MHS Athletic Hall of Fame.
He will join retired head baseball coach Ed Starling, 1920s era athlete Allen Bump and long-time football statistician Ron Sabins (honorary member) between Friday’s boys junior varsity and varsity basketball games against Upper Arlington.
Many high school athletes would be fortunate if they could claim one conference championship on his or her resume during their time of competition.
Adkins, a 1997 MHS graduate, has three such titles to his name and all in different sports.
He was a member of the 1994 gridiron squad that captured an Ohio Capital Conference crown.
Adkins was also on the 1997 basketball team that won the first OCC roundball championship in school history.
A few months later, he was an infielder on the Monarch baseball outfit that also claimed the first OCC championship in that sport in school history.
“Those OCC championships are what I am most proud of as far as my high school athletic career,” said Adkins. ”I just remember all of my coaches, teammates and the bus rides to those games.”
Adkins was not only a part of championship teams, but also accomplished quite a bit as an individual athlete.
He played quarterback and safety on the football team and earned honorable mention All-Ohio accolades as a senior in the defensive backfield.
Adkins was named to first-team All-Ohio honors as a second baseman during his senior season of 1997. He batted more than .400 during the entire regular season and around .600 during conference contests.
He was a three-year starter as a second baseman for the Monarchs.
Adkins also earned first-team honors in the Central District and OCC for the diamond sport.
As a senior, he batted .430 with 37 hits and 33 RBIs.
He also earned honorable mention OCC status for basketball as a senior.
Adkins said he can’t remember much in the way of his individual basketball stats.
“I played on teams with guys like (fellow Hall of Famer) Kenny Chaffin, Wes Heckler and Shawn Waller,” he said. “I really didn’t have to do much scoring with those guys around.”
Adkins’ exploits on the football field, baseball diamond and basketball court earned him the school’s All-Sports Award during his senior year.
As a native of Marysville, Adkins said it’s special to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
“I grew up in Marysville and know a lot of history about Marysville sports,” he said. ”Over the years, I’ve crossed paths with 16-to-20 current Hall of Famers, either as teachers, coaches or players.
“This is a huge honor for me.”
