The North Union Wildcats earned their first win of the season by blanking Indian Lake, 13-0, on Friday.
North Union head coach Nick Hajjar said it felt good to put a game in the win column.
“It feels good to get a win, but it wasn’t pretty,” he said. “But it is definitely better than the alternative.”
North Union posted nearly 400 yards of offense, thanks in large part to some solid running from senior back Trevor
Moran.
Moran broke the century mark with 125 yards gained on the ground, while Preston Crabtree, NU’s quarterback, went
11-17 in the air for 134.
Hajjar said his Cats tried to return to their running game against Lakers.
“We wanted to return to our run game, but we ended up throwing the ball 20 times,” he said. “It was more of a balanced
offense than what we normally play.”
Both of the Wildcats’ touchdowns came off the run with Trevyn Feasel notching a five-yard TD.
Crabtree scored the Cats’ second TD on an 11-yard run.
While the offense was posting points on the board, the NU defense was keeping the Lakers out of the end zone.
“They (NU defense) executed tonight,” Hajjar said. “Indian Lake had one drive where they were pressuring.
“The defense was able to bend and not break.”
But it wasn’t all stellar for the Cats.
North Union lost the ball on three occasions with two fumbles and an interception.
Hajjar said his team is going to have to become more consistent about holding on to the ball.
Now with a win under its belt, North Union will move on to Graham next Friday.
“They are 2-0 and have a lot of confidence, but it is league play and we’ve got to push through,” said Hajjar.
