Marysville High School winter sports teams will begin games later this week
The Ohio Capital Conference and Marysville High School sports are back open for business.
The Monarchs, along with the rest of the conference, have been shut down for the past few weeks due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The circuit announced several weeks ago that no schools within the OCC would be permitted to play each other (either within divisions or cross-over contests) until Friday, Dec. 18.
The conference announced over the weekend the shutdown has been lifted.
That means Monarch teams will return to action within the next few days.
“Our boys basketball team will host Thomas Worthington on Friday and the girls will play at Thomas Worthington on Friday,” said MHS athletic director Joey Day.
The boys wrestling squad will compete at the Harrison Duals on Saturday.
Schedules for the Marysville High School swimming and gymnastics teams have yet to be finalized.
“This has been a long time coming,” said Day. “Our teams have been anxious to get going and compete in games. They just want to see all the hard work they’ve put in rewarded.”
MHS squads have been permitted to practice the past couple of weeks as coaches, players and fans awaited the Dec. 18 start-up date.
Day said the Monarch boys and girls hoop squads each missed three or four games during the shutdown.
He did say, however, that all of the contests have been rescheduled for later in the 2020-21 campaign.
While the MHS sports seasons will be starting later this week, Day cautioned no one is completely out of the woods.
It’s a situation that could change from day-to-day depending upon the health of Monarch athletes and the health of future opponents.
“All we’re going to do is focus on what we can control,” said Day. “Our schedules will depend on circumstances relating to us and our upcoming opponents.”
