Ayden Sanford and Batai Lease scored in double figures on Tuesday as Triad’s boys basketball team edged Northeastern, 56-52.
The outcome gave the Cardinals their second victory of the season in 18 games. It also marked their first Ohio Heritage Conference triumph in 14 contests.
It was Triad’s first OHC win in nearly two years, since a verdict over Madison Plains on Feb. 13, 2018.
The Cardinals and Jets were stalemated at 10-all by the conclusion of the opening quarter.
Northeastern managed just a pair of baskets from Jake Nichols during the second set.
As such, the Jets (8-10 overall and 6-8 in the OHC) trailed 23-14 at the turn.
“I don’t believe we’ve gone into any halftime this year with a lead,” said Triad coach Jason Malone.
Northeastern rallied to tie the contest 36-36 by the end of the third period.
“Northeastern came out on fire just as we expected, but our guys maintained their composure,” said Malone.
Sanford, Lease and Drew Campbell each knocked down three-pointers during the fourth quarter to propel Triad (which will play at West Jefferson on Friday) to the victory.
“We hit some big shots and buckled down on defense enough to slow down their momentum,” said Malone. “I’m really proud of our guys. Little by little we’re progressing and getting better.”
