With potentially more than 1,000 votes yet to be counted, Union County saw record votes and record voter turnout in this year’s election. According to officials at the Union County Board of Elections, 32,927 ballots were cast and counted in the 2020 general election. That represents about 80% of the county’s 41,429 registered voters. And while the voter turnout was record-setting, polling places were steady, but not overrun. Republican Danielle Sullivan has defeated Democrat LeighAnn Merriman Moots, and will be the next County Clerk of Courts. A local man has been indicted for allegedly attacking a woman twice in less than two weeks. The Union County Grand Jury has indicted Joseph R. Boerger, 40, of 433 Ash St., Marysville. He is charged with two counts of domestic violence, felonies of the fourth degree. Typically, domestic violence is charged as a misdemeanor, however, once an individual is convicted of domestic violence, future allegations can be charged as felonies. Union County Fair officials are moving forward with a plan to raise funds and construct a new 20,000 square foot building on the fairgrounds. The building would be similar to one in Wayne County, but on a smaller scale. Officials have not decided on an exact location on the fair grounds for the building. While the 2020 swimming pool season was not financially profitable, city official say the expense was worth it. “We were just glad that with everything going on, we were able to open the pool and have a pool season when so many other communities did not,” said Amanda Morris, city recreation and event manager. “The hope and enjoyment that our community got out of it was worth it.” Revenue for the 2020 pool was about $149,000. A local nurse is under indictment for allegedly staling drugs from her patients. The Union County Grand Jury has indicted Starla Alexander, 38, of 16390 Hillview Road, Marysville. Alexander is charged with one count each of theft of drugs and aggravated possession of drugs.
