Citing a “significant increase of both COVID-19 cases and quarantines,” Fairbanks School District is making some changes, at least in the short term. While 2020 has been difficult financially for many, Marysville officials say the city is doing remarkably well. At Monday night’s Finance Committee meeting, Finance Director Brad Lutz presented an update on the city’s financial situation. “I think it’s been a good year overall,” Lutz told the committee. Lutz said property tax collection, about $1.7 million, is at 96% of budgeted receipts, however, receipts are $207,499 or 13.8% greater than the same period from the prior year. The Ohio Department of Transportation is asking for public input on its U.S. 33 Corridor Plan. With that in mind, ODOT is hosting a virtual public meeting from 4-6 p.m. Thursday to discuss “The US-33 Corridor Plan: A vision for Logan and Union counties.” The 20-year, long-range plan looks at not only U.S. 33, but access to the highway from Route 274, west of Bellefontaine, to Route 161 at the City of Dublin. Jonathan Alder is moving back to a hybrid learning plan. Thursday, the district notified parents and community members of the change. A Florida woman and her friend have been indicted, charged with allegedly trying to abduct the woman’s grandfather The Union County Grand Jury has indicted Breanna Nickole Whitmer, 22, of Palm Bay, Florida, and Gage Tylor Whaley of West Melbourne, Florida. Marysville officials are looking for people to help evaluate the city’s charter. The city’s charter was originally approved by voters in 1981 and must be reviewed every four years. Per the charter, a Charter Review Board must review the document and present findings to council. The Union County Grand Jury has indicted Joe Lewis Bernard McGraw IV, also known as “Lil Bra,” of Youngstown, and Logan B. Wolfe, 22, of 163 W. Center Street, Milford Center. McGraw and Wolfe are each charged with two counts of aggravated robbery and one count each of kidnapping and theft. The City of Marysville is moving forward with a pair of new taxes, aimed at improving local streets. At Monday night’s meeting, City Council approved legislation to impose a pair of $5 increases on vehicle registration beginning in 2022. The fees, which are expected to generate about $230,000 annually, can only be used for street maintenance or paving projects. The two pieces of legislation passed 6-1, with only council member Aaron Carpenter voting against the increase. A Chicago-based company is moving forward with plans to construct another solar farm in northern Union County. Officials from Invenergy met recently with the Union County Commissioners to discuss a proposed solar farm to be built in York, Liberty and Taylor townships. The proposed Cadence Solar Energy Center is a 275-megawatt solar-powered electric generation facility. Erin Saul, on the renewable energy team with Invenergy, said the company already has about 5,100 acres under lease in Union County. A dropped cell phone led police to a pair of suspected thieves. The Union County Grand Jury has indicted Jason K. Barker, 46, of 229 N. Cherry St., Marysville and Brandon Michael Bowsher, 18, of 32 Spruce Drive, Marysville. Barker and Bowsher are each charged with one count each of theft and receiving stolen property. With potentially more than 1,000 votes yet to be counted, Union County saw record votes and record voter turnout in this year’s election. According to officials at the Union County Board of Elections, 32,927 ballots were cast and counted in the 2020 general election. That represents about 80% of the county’s 41,429 registered voters.
