The Lady Cats of North Union were able to keep on the winning track when they downed the Lady Raiders of Benjamin Logan, 54-33, on Thursday.
The victory came despite the fact that NU struggled to sink shots when down low.
“We played OK,” said head coach Rachel Weaver. “We got the open looks, but we just couldn’t make our shots.
“I think we shot 32 percent from the floor,” she said. “If you see our shot chart, there are a lot of x’s (misses).”
The Lady Cats started the game out strong and were able to utilize freshman Journey Blevins on the low block for six points.
Taylor Day helped with some buckets from the outside.
The Cats kept their foot on the gas in the second quarter with 17 points.
Maddie Ruhl led the charge with her six points of her 11 points coming in the quarter.
Despite the number of points, however, the Lady Cats still struggled to sink many open looks.
“What concerns me about it is the x’s are in the high percentage shot areas,” said Weaver. “We wouldn’t have anything to talk about if they are shooting three’s and missing them.
“They were all in the paint,” she said. “We’ve got a lot of things to work on.”
After the turn, the Cats stepped up their man-to-man defensive pressure. They were able to produce some points off turnovers.
An additional 12 points stretched NU’s lead to 43-25.
North Union kept up the pressure during the final quarter. Its offense, though, started to fade as the ball just couldn’t find the bottom of the hole.
“I think that our energy was low because we couldn’t finish at the end,” Weaver said. “Finishing always gives you that additional adrenaline to keep going up and down.
“I think they started to get frustrated because they were getting the open looks, but they just couldn’t put the ball in the hole.”
The Lady Cats (2-0) will return to action on Thursday when they travel to Ontario to take on the Lady Warriors.
