The North Union football team came up with a quick and easy 50-7 win over Central Buckeye Conference opponent Urbana on Friday.
Coach Nick Hajjr said the outcome was exactly what he was hoping for.
“We were hoping we could come out tonight and get started fast,” he said.
That is exactly what he got from all facets of the game.
The Wildcats marched down the field on their opening drive in 10 plays, nine of which came on the ground, to pick up their first of many touchdowns.
The initial TD came on a three-yard run by Trevor Moran.
Ricky Weigand added the PAT to make it a 7-0 contest.
The Wildcats’ defense did their job holding the Hill Climbers to a three-and-out.
NU’s Trevyn Feasel fielded the punt and made his way around all the Urbana tacklers for a 60-yard jaunt into the end zone.
Weigand sailed his kick through the uprights to make it a 14-0 game.
North Union’s defense picked off Urbana’s quarterback after only two plays, taking over on the Climbers’ 30-yard line.
Five plays later, Moran found himself in the end zone again, this time from 16 yards out.
Weigand remained perfect to take the Cats to a 21-0 margin.
Hajjar said it was good to get contributions from all three phases of the game.
“Our defense got stops for short fields,” he said. “On special teams we had a nice return and then offensively we were clicking.
“It is a hint of what can happen if we don’t turn it over and when we eliminate penalties.”
The good times continued for the NU offense when Owen Davis took a 21-yard run to the house for the Cats’ fourth TD.
Weigand added another solid kick for a 28-0 lead.
Hajjar said his team just seems to be finding its rhythm.
“I think we are settling in with how we are with our mixing and matching,” he said.
“Whether it is the run game or the pass game, we’re just trying to get some different guys touches and play to the strength of our team.”
North Union continued to breeze past Urbana’s defense as they picked up a few more touchdowns in the half.
Moran scored from a yard out and Feasel made a trip to the end zone on a seven-yard run.
Weigand went six-for-six on extra points.
The Cats lined up for their seventh PAT, but a bad snap left holder Feasel scrambling.
Feasel found Zach Vernon in the corner of the end zone for a two-point conversion.
With that point, NU held a 50-0 lead at the half.
The Hill Climbers were able to pull together one solid drive that netted seven points after the break.
Aaron Norris found the end zone on a 10-yard run.
Will Donahoe added the conversion.
Hajjar said his team’s execution resulted in the win. He hopes the Cats can continue their success to finish the season.
“Hopefully, we can continue to play better moving forward because we’ve got a big game next week against a Ben Logan team that knows us well,” he said. “Both teams are coming off wins and it is the last regular season game of the year.
“Both teams are going to want to fight to get a win to keep the momentum going into the playoffs.”
The Wildcats will host the Raiders, who defeated Northwestern 47-14 on Friday, to close out the regular season.
