The North Union Wildcat wrestlers took the top spot in a tri-match between Fairbanks and Triad on Wednesday.
The evening featured area high school, middle school and youth matches.
The Cats topped the Cardinals, 60-18, and followed up with a 64-11 win over the host school Fairbanks. North Union head coach Garret Andrews said it was great to see his young wrestlers battle for some tight wins.
“The best part about it was winning several close matches that could have gone either way,” Andrews said. “We had a couple guys get their first wins of the season and that was exciting.”
The Panthers split their matches and opened with a 39-24 win over Triad.
Fairbanks head coach James Kasser was happy with his team during its home match.
“This was a nice way to open the season,” he said. “The guys were excited as a team and some got their first wins of season. We did well against Triad with all of our wins winning by pins.”
The Cardinals, on the other hand, struggled in their matches. Triad head coach Mike Zizzo said his team has some things it needs to work on, with conditioning at the top of that list.
“We saw some good things and some bad things,” said Zizzo. “They were tired going into the second period, so we need to fix that.
“We need more conditioning and basic stuff,” he said. “I don’t know if we had ‘wrestlers’ block,’ but we’ve got some things to work on.”
