While next year’s presidential election will get a lot of attention, there are a handful of local elections of note for 2020. Wednesday was the deadline for local candidates to file for the March 17, 2020 primary election. Independent candidates filing for either position must file by March 16, 2020. Marysville City Council has again tabled a plan to amend the city’s zoning code. Council was scheduled to take a vote Monday on a rewrite to code. Because of the response at the November public hearing, Mayor J.R. Rausch created an ad hoc committee to discuss the plan ahead of Monday night’s vote. A pair of men are facing felony charges after allegedly lying on the federal background check, required to buy a gun. The Union County Grand Jury has indicted Ryan Jay Miller, 27, of 14 Aspen Dr., Marysville, and Daniel R. Johns, 54, of 106 W. Patterson Ave., Bellefontaine. Miller and Johns are each charged with one count of falsification to purchase a firearm stemming from separate incidents. Police are saying that criminal charges are likely after a Marysville student allegedly made threatening comments. “We are aware of some threatening statements made by a student of the Early College High School and are investigating the incident, criminal charges are likely pending,” Marysville Division of Police Deputy Chief Tony Brooks said in a statement to the Journal-Tribune. A Mill Valley man could be facing a decade and a half in prison after allegedly sexually assaulting a child. The Union County Grand Jury has indicted Timothy Daum, 58, of 345 Saddlebred Circle, Marysville. Daum is charged with three counts of gross sexual abuse. According to court documents, between 2012 and 2015, Daum repeatedly had sexual contact with a child who was 7 at the time the alleged abuse began. City Manager Terry Emery said Monday that finance director Justin Nahvi has accepted a similar position in the City of Delaware. A Marion man could be facing more than two decades in prison after allegedly raping and kidnapping a local teen. The Union County Grand Jury has indicted Jaden Michael Thomas Darst-Mullins, 18, of 375 Blaine Ave., Marion. Darst-Mullins is charged with two counts of rape and kidnapping. Union County Prosecutor David Phillips said the victim, 14 at the time of the alleged rape, knew Darst-Mullins. Union County is asking for help to create a multi-use trail from Plain City to Woodstock. The Union County Commissioners have signed a letter of support asking for funding through the Ohio State Capital Budget. The county is asking for about $975,000 to purchase of 153 acres of former railroad bed to construct a 13.5-mile multi-use trail. The trail would run the width of Union County, beginning on Cemetery Pike in Plain City, Madison County, and ending in Woodstock, Champaign County. Marysville officials are working to better communicate with income tax preparers in the community. At a recent meeting, resident Kathy Young, who works for a national tax preparation company, addressed city council. “We need to know the right way to file,” Young said. The income tax rate for anyone living in or working in Marysville is 1.5%. Generally, gross income and business net profits are taxable at the local level. A Marysville man has been indicted after allegedly sharing nude photos and encouraging a child to post videos of herself on a pornographic website. The Union County Grand Jury has indicted Anthony Campbell, 19, of 714 Watkins Glen Boulevard. Campbell is charged with one count each of compelling prostitution and disseminating material harmful to juveniles. Assistant Union County Prosecutor Rick Rodger said the victim’s parents discovered some concerning items on their daughter’s phone. The phone was taken to the Marysville Division of Police. HILES A man previously charged with tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice in connection with the death of a local woman has now been charged with causing that death. The Union County Grand Jury has indicted Todd Phillip Hiles, 42, whose last known address is in Columbus. Hiles is charged with one count each of involuntary manslaughter, corrupting another with drugs, trafficking in heroin, trafficking in a Fentanyl-related compound and trafficking in cocaine.
