Area firefighters were given the opportunity to practice extrication skills on newer vehicles on Thursday the Transportation Research Center in East Liberty. Crews this morning demolished the former Union County Veterans Service Commission building near the county courthouse on Sixth Street. Veterans Services is now in the new Union County Freedom Center, 
835 E. 5th Street, Suite B. Before the Veterans Services Commission, the building housed the county sanitary sewage administration. Once the building debris is removed, the land will be used for additional parking space at the courthouse. Work began Sunday and is slated to continue until Oct. 8. The detour route is simply getting off at Northwest Parkway as drivers approach the bridge, then immediately getting back on Route 4.
