A group of Plain City businessmen and residents are asking council members to explain their vote on a proposed apartment complex. In August, council rejected an ordinance that would have rezoned 8.8 acres property on Jefferson Avenue and Perry Pike and paved the way for a 112-unit apartment complex. The rezoning had been approved by planning and zoning, which recommended the rezoning to council. A Nevada woman could be facing more than six decades in prison after allegedly swindling a local woman out of about half a million dollars. Denise Parker, 62, of Las Vegas, has been indicted on four counts of identity fraud against a person in a protected class, and one count each of theft from a person in a protected class, receiving stolen property and engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity. Driving could be getting more expensive in Plain City and Jerome Township. Plain City and Jerome Township are each working on legislation that would add an additional fee each time a resident registers a vehicle. In Plain City, village council is acting to impose an additional $10 per vehicle tax on vehicles in Union County and $5 for vehicles in Madison County. According to the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Plain City already imposes a $15 fee on each registration in Madison County and $5 on each registration in Union County. Traffic on Route 38, between Walker Woods Lane and Seventh Street, has been reduced to one lane to allow for repaving by the Ohio Department of Transportation. Flaggers will maintain two-way traffic on the road. Crews, shown above near Royal Oak Drive, are starting at the south end of the project and working north toward the city. Both lanes are expected to open by Oct. 13. The Union County Engineers Office has also closed Shirk Road, between 19690 Shirk Road and Dog Leg Road for a large culvert replacement. At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Jerome Township Board of Trustees got an update on economic development in the county. As part of that discussion, the trustees questioned the housing options in the county. Union County officials are already making plans for the 2019 budget. “It seems like we just adopted a budget,” Union County Administrator Tim Hansley recently told a group of county elected officials and department heads. He said that he and Budget Officer Letitia Rayl would be looking at revenue and other numbers for 2019. The Ohio Department of Health has confirmed that several mosquitos, trapped in Union County, have tested positive for West Nile Virus. The Union County Health Department received notification from the Ohio Department of Health Thursday afternoon that five mosquito samples tested positive for West Nile Virus. All five samples were from the same trapping site near a stream in the southern part of Marysville. Union County now joins 54 other Ohio counties reporting West Nile Virus activity.
