Janice L. Ottoman Ottaviano Thomas, 79, of Marysville, died peacefully at her home Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, surrounded by her children. She owned and operated the Gary’s Drive In restaurant with her husband, Gary, for 18 years. She was then a waitress for a brief time at Hermie’s Home Restaurant before changing careers to become a corrections officer at the Marysville Women’s Reformatory for 22 years. After retiring, she continued her husband’s passion of helping people in need by contributing to local food pantries. She was a native of Marion and a graduate of Marion Harding High School. Richard Lee “Dick” VanHoose, 89, of Plain City, died at his home Friday, Feb. 22, 2019. He worked at Hayden Elevator and most recently at Rich’s Bakery in Hilliard. He enjoyed bowling at Hilliard Lanes, gardening, hunting rabbits and squirrels and chewing tobacco. He was born Feb. 9, 1930, in Amlin, to the late Lewis B. and Cora (Patton) VanHoose. A fan of hockey, he graduated as salutatorian of the class of 1996 at Indian Lake High School and was recognized in “Who’s Who Among American High School Students.” He continued his education at Miami University and retired from GE in Cincinnati, where he had worked for the fraud department. Richard A. “Dickie” Bolenbaugh, 62, of Marysville, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, at his residence. A 1974 graduate of Marysville High School, he retired from Picklesimer Trucking, where he worked as a mechanic and truck driver for more than 25 years. The Marysville School District wants to improve its bus camera system. At a board of education meeting Thursday night, District Treasurer Todd Johnson reported the school has applied for a $40,000 safety grant from the Bureau of Worker’s Comp (BWC) to replace the camera system for the district’s buses. Johnson said he learned about the grant in January, and notified each department head about it. Most of Marysville experienced a short power outage Tuesday afternoon. Mary Anne Kabel, director of corporate communications for DP&L, said the outage occurred for 93 seconds, and affected 9,300 customers at 12:33 p.m. in Marysville. She said the outage was due to DP&L employees working on a relay system at a Marysville substation. The Marysville Division of Police conducted a planned drug search on the Marysville Early College High School (ECHS) this morning. According to a press release, at 7:50 a.m. today, the police used trained police dogs to search the student and teacher parking lots and classrooms of the school. The release states the police went through “a sampling” of classrooms in all areas of the building. “Our search did not yield any hits,” ECHS Principal Ken Chaffin wrote in the release. “No drugs or illegal substances were found.” Chaffin wrote he believes random, unannounced drug searches are one approach that “I…

Douglas C. Smith, 72, of Marysville, died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2019, at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, surrounded by his family. A 1964 graduate of Piqua High School, he served his country in the U.S. Army in Vietnam.
